Screening and early detection

Screening is an approach that aims to detect, as early as possible and before any symptoms present, lesions that are likely to be cancerous or are likely to evolve into cancer. The benefits of screening are that it detects cancer earlier, enhances patient care and reduces the severity of any treatment or after-effects. It is currently possible to screen for and detect certain types of cancer early. Screening can be carried out either as part of a programme organised by the public health authorities (breast cancer, colorectal cancer) or individually at the initiative of the patient or healthcare professional (cervical cancer, melanoma, etc.).
