Research in the Areas of the Humanities & Social Sciences, Epidemiology and Public Health (HSS-EPH)

Research into the Humanities & Social Sciences, Epidemiology and Public Health contributes to the fight against cancer by using theoretical and methodological tools offered by economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, etc.

These are analysed primarily in terms of:

  • Specificities of the experience of cancer as a disease
  • Behaviours for the prevention of and mental adjustment to the disease
  • Healthcare work
  • Social representations of cancer and health
  • Economic challenges related to cancer and its treatment

They also concern the relationship of all of these studies with biomedical and epidemiological research, which has been contributing to the fight against cancer for many years.

While a patient is certainly a biological body, he is also a specific social being, existing in a history, a culture, an education, a family, emotional and professional network, in short a society, having certain rights, obligations and a particular concept of health.

Thus, HSS-EPHs address issues at the heart of the two human challenges in the 2009-2013 Cancer Plan:

  • Understanding social inequalities with respect to cancers in order to fight them more effectively
  • Facilitating the resumption of day-to-day living and social life after cancer (taking into account the consequences of treatment, resumption of employment, access to insurance and loans, etc.).
