Accueil Prevention Risk and Protection Factors

Individual behaviour can aggravate or reduce the risk of cancer

Cancer can be caused by a number of different factors. Studies have shown that tobacco is the primary cause of cancer, substantially ahead of all other factors and often acts in conjunction with other risk factors, such as alcohol. These two risk factors are the focus of measures in the 2009-2013 Cancer Plan (10 and 11).
Conversely, nutrition has been identified as a key preventative factor and is covered in measure 11 of the Cancer Plan.

Tobacco

Almost one third of new cancer cases in men are related to tobacco

Alcohol

The consumption of alcoholic beverages is the second most common cause of avoidable mortality from cancer

Alimentation, activité physique et cancers

Une alimentation équilibrée associée à la pratique d’une activité physique peut réduire le risque de cancers
