Endocrine Disruptors

Last updated on : 06/28/2010

According to the WHO, "Endocrine disruptors are natural or artificial exogenous chemical substances that may interfere with the function of the endocrine system and result in harmful effects on the organism or its descendants."
Although there is controversy surrounding the effects of exposure to low doses of endocrine disruptors on humans, exposure to these substances is now suspected to cause a number of different conditions, including hormone-dependent cancers.
A study published by a team from INSERM in June 2010 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology demonstrates a possible association between exposure to chlordecone and the development of prostate cancer.
