Accueil Screening Those involved in the Screening Programme Gynaecologists

Gynaecologists

Gynaecologists play a crucial role in breast and cervical cancer screening. In the organised breast cancer screening programme, gynaecologists act as referring doctors who can direct patients to a radiologist colleague, give opinions on mammograms taken during screening, provide support during the diagnosis process and counsel the patient in the event that an abnormality is detected in the mammogram. Gynaecologists can also prescribe screening as part of the organised programme.
Cervical cancer screening primarily depends on the initiative of healthcare professionals. In this regard, gynaecologists are the main people involved, given that they prescribe and perform the cervical smear test in the majority of cases.  In addition, they play a key role in raising awareness among women about the importance of regular cervical cancer screening, regardless of whether they have had the HPV vaccination.
