The GP plays a pivotal role in the various screening initiatives. First off, their involvement in the organised breast and colorectal cancer screening programmes is vital. Basically, the role of the GP is to provide the patient with guidance, information and encouragement with respect to screening. The GP also co-ordinates treatment in cases of positive results.

The GP can also take the initiative for cervical cancer screening. In the light of their role as referring doctor and their proximity to the patient, they are also involved in early detection of skin and oral cancer.
