Certified Radiologists and Radiology Centres

Last updated on: 04/19/2010

Women aged 50 to 74 are invited by the (departmental or interdepartmental) management structures responsible for organising screening to have a clinical breast examination and mammogram (two incidences: face and oblique) with double reading of the images. This examination, the fee for which is fully covered, is performed by a radiologist selected by the woman from a list of specialists certified based on their experience. This list is enclosed with the letter sent out by the management structures.
In accordance with the specifications published in the Official Journal, in the addendum to the decree of 29 September 2006, certified radiologists must:

  • adhere to the regulations in force with respect to mammography equipment quality control
  • have completed a special screening training programme
  • conduct at least 500 mammograms a year, at least 250 of which (Good Use of Care Agreement published in the OJ on 24 March 2002) are part of organised breast cancer screening.

The radiologists providing the second reading are volunteers who have received special training and who have conducted at least 500 mammograms a year throughout the history of their practice and who have committed to reading at least 1,500 additional mammograms annually as a second reader.
The list of radiologists certified for the organised breast cancer screening programme is updated once every 6 months.
